from Sthlm….

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

How much do we love Lisa Bengtsson?? Alot! A new shop from Sthlm” was launched last month. They introduce a new Swedish designer each month. This months spotlight designer is the lovely Lisa Bengtsson. Her new collection of plates “Between Us Women” celebrates the women in all of our families. Each plate has character of its own, offering a unique story and perspective, complete with an inscription on the back (in Swedish). There are four in a series of twelve. Expect to see more to come!
Last month from Stlhm spotlighted Lotta Kühlhorn. Lotta was one of the first designers in Sweden to embrace the graphic elements of “junk culture,” pop, films, and mass produced items, and reinterpret them as her own. Read more here.

George Nelson

Friday, January 16th, 2009

Guest Blogger: HermanMillerSeating.com on “Love That George Nelson“.

George Nelson was a design genius, no doubt. His work with Herman Miller is legendary. Nelson is responsible for such classics as the as the Marshmallow Sofa, the Swag Leg Armchair, the Coconut chair and many others. Known for his innovative designs and quirky style, Nelson had a knack for seamlessly blending form and function to great some of today’s modern design masterpieces.

Nelson was recruited by Herman Miller’s founder, D.J. DePree, who saw one of Nelson’s creations spotlighted in a 1945 issue of Life Magazine. This partnership was indeed a beautiful thing, and together they ushered in a new era of modern design. Always a humble man, Nelson described his career as a series of creative “zaps,” where inspiration slammed into him from out of the blue. Take a look at the Marshmallow Sofa – who else but George Nelson could have thought this up in the cookie-cutter 1950s?

Herman Miller continues to push design boundaries even today. Whether you’re looking at a Herman Miller chair, desk, or table lamp; there’s a little bit of George Nelson in that design. He was one of the greats. You gotta love that George Nelson!

Here’s to the Day’s

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

There a certain people who love textile design. Then there are those who love to design furniture. And then there are those who just design rooms. What about the ones who do it all! Like the Day’s?? Yes.
The furniture designer Robin Day and his textile designer wife Lucienne made a huge statement in British Design after World War 2. They pioneered a new modern idiom and are still Britain’s most celebrated design couple. Read there amazing bio here.

Peter Frank

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

One job that I would be more than willing to take is a prop/set designer. I cant imagine a better design job. Its as if you are an artist starting with a blank canvas. You are able to create something beautiful and use furniture, accessory’s and art to complete the picture. (I get giddy just thinking about it.) Peter Frank is a set designer with quite the portfolio under his belt. He is represented by Thomas Truehaft.

10 stars

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

I really like this room and I think the reason is the lovely light shades are so soothing and then you have pops of bright colors. The mirror is quirky and the curtains are traditional but they compliment each other. Mid Century Modern furniture fits perfectly in this space. Not surprising the brains behind this room is designer Chloe Redmond Warner who also is an editor for Lucky Magazine. Her portfolio is eye candy to say the least.
All in all I give this room a thumbs up!

Lisa Bengtsson

Sunday, May 4th, 2008

When I think of an absolutely talented designer who has ran towards her dreams, Lisa Bengtsson comes to my mind. This 27 year old graphic designer from Sweden has worked very hard and has succeeded at pattern design, illustration design, graphic design and now the most fabulous part, she is a wallpaper designer of one of my most favorite wallpaper lines. Her 2 wallpaper projects, ” The Family” and “Svärmor” are wildly popular.
I was able to ask her a few questions via email. (I so wish in person.) She seems wonderful and I must say that we have a few things in common even if we do live over 5,000 miles apart.
Enjoy!

Where were you born?
1981 in a little town called Gnosjö in the south of Sweden. But now I live in Stockholm

When did you realize that you wanted to design?
I’ve always been fond of creative work and painting. When I grew up I liked to communicate by the means of; visualization, colors, form, pattern and typography, which today has become my job. Design for me is about communicating a certain feeling to other people. The day I realized I could communicate that feeling through my own creative ability, I decided I want to become a designer.

What places inspire you?
antiquarian bookshop

What is your favorite coffee or tea drink?
I love tea….and the best is …hmm let me see chai tea

Do you prefer black or brown? Cream or white?
black and cream white

How did you come up with the idea for your “Svärmor” wallpaper?
The name is “Svärmor” which means, “mother in law” in Swedish. It’s a pattern made out of singular shoes coming from different periods in my life. Why shoes? There is something special about a pair of shoes. It’s an accessory we always need to wear, which changes its appearance depending on where we go. Each shoe breaths a history of our life – some of them stay forever,
others leave only a footprint behind. What I like the most about shoes is their profile, silhouette and the relationship between its shape and shadow. “Svärmor” brings to mind the issue of our consumption society and ask the question; do we really need so many new pair of shoes each season? Do we? Maybe we do, this wallpaper is a contribution to all the shoe lovers out
in the world. But why the name mother in law? Well, mother in law is also a happy family member.

Who is your favorite clothing designer?
I like Acne it is a swedish company how do really good stuff

What thing in your makeup bag can you not live without?
rosch (I don´t know how it spells but the red/orange powder you put at the cheek
